Her cross-disciplinary works include creating immersive environments often incorporating light and sound, public art projects, sculpture, video works, publishing, and more. Safe and Sound: The Third Dimension

Alona Rodeh published “Safe and Sound: The Third Dimension” on the occasion of Architecture of the Nights, a solo show at Kunstpalais, Erlangen (2019). It also documents Rodeh’s solo exhibition DARK AGES 2020 at Salzburger Kunstverein (2019). The publication functions as an exhibition catalog and in parallel constitutes the third issue of Rodeh’s ongoing series of magazine-like, research-based artist publications. Both shows revolve thematically around the topic of urban illumination, and features, among others: re-published historical texts, archive footage, advertisements, and scientific illustrations as well as newly commissioned contributions by external historians about the use of light and sound systems in nightclubs, the blackouts in Europe during WWII, and more.” —Malte Kröger

The publication was kindly supported by Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn.

Safe and Sound: Fire

Following Rodeh’s artist residency at the Berlin Fire Brigade, the publication includes four new essays by professionals who tackle the subject of urban fire from different perspectives: Thöre Schröder, a journalist, Gilly Karjevsky, a curator working in the built environment, Kristen McCleary, a professor of history, and Bruce Hensler, a retired firefighter with 41 years of experience. An additional essay is Ulrike Meinhof’s “Setting Fire To Department Stores” (1969). The booklet’s epilog is a photo essay compiled from the Berlin Fire Brigade archives: documentations of Berlin fire engines’ self-caused accidents.

ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik, the Artist Dis-Placement Residency initiators, supported the project as a whole. The Berlin Senate Department of Culture and Europe support the publication directly.
